Carl Wilhelm Tesche

Biography

Wood engravings, illustrations, labels, book jackets. Born 28 March 1901 (or 1904) in Barmen (Remscheid?); resident in Bergischen Land until 1945. 1919: trained at Kunstgewerbeschule, Barmen. 1921: trained at the Stuttgart Akademie under Ernst Schneidler; later freelanced in Wuppertal-Oberbarmen where he was living in 1939. Autumn 1940: start of military service. During his leisure time Tesche drew scenes in the towns in which he was stationed: Rennes, Danzig and others. His home, studio and collection of work were destroyed in an air-raid on Wuppertal. Tesche died in a Russian prisoner-of-war camp on 2 June 1945. The remains of his estate were looked after by his widow, Erika, a graphic artist Tesche had married in 1939.
