Eugen Funk

Biography

Publicity, logos. Born 17 May 1911 in Stuttgart. From 1923: interested in photography. 1930-34: studied typography and design at the Stuttgart Akademie: a teacher was F.H. Ernst Schneidler. 1935-7: freelance in Stuttgart; designer of books and advertisements. 1937-45: directed graphics studio of the large Stuttgart printing firm Union-Druckerei, interrupted by military service and work for the armaments industry. 1945-8: art director of the Stuttgart journal Der Standpunkt (Point of view). From 1949: with Walter Brudi, succeeded F.H. Ernst Schneidler as head of the department of graphic arts and book design at the Stuttgart Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Künste. 1958: taught at Pratt Institute, New York. 1976: retired.
