Biography

Posters, illustrations, book jackets. Born 17 April 1905 in Tetschen-Bodenbach (Sudetenland). Studied at the Dresden Kunstgewerbe-Akademie; then went to Munich where he worked in an advertising studio. After studying at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, he then went to Prague where he worked as a commefrcial artist. 1938: settled in Berlin. 1943-5: taught at the Deutsche Hochschulinstitut für Bildende Kunst, Prague. At war’s end he fled on foot to Riedenburg. From 1949: political caricatures for the newspapers Nürnberger Nachrichten and Deutschen Zeitung. 1954-6: illustrated for the new Simplicissimus. From 1958: caricatures for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Died 7 November 1983 in Herrsching am Ammersee.
