Hans Joachim Barschel

Biography

Posters, book covers, book jackets. Born 22 February 1912 in Berlin. Studied art and design under Ernst Böhm and O.H.W. Hadank at the Berlin Hochschule für freie und angewandte Kunst, and also inspired by A.M. Cassandre’s work. Designed exhibits for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, and the German Government Railways; also designed posters, book jackets and window displays. 1937: emigrated to New York, soon having a design studio. During the 1940s he designed numerous covers for Fortune, Town and Country, Steel Horizons and others, as well as graphics for CIBA, Sharp and Dohme and La Roche. Art director of a publication produced by the Health Department of New York. From 1952: moved to Rochester, New York, where he was art director for Great Lakes Press Corp., pharmaceutical publishers. 1953-76: Professor of Graphic Communications at Rochester Institute of Technology, having a major influence upon the visual communications program. Barschel eventually became professor emeritus, graphic design. Died 8 July 1998.
