Biography

Book jackets, illustrations. Born 3 June 1883 in Pforzheim. 1899-1906: studied at the Karlsruhe Kunstakademie: teachers included Schmid-Reutte and Wilhelm Trübner. 1907: worked at the Meissen Porcelain Works. 1908-10: freelance designer in Berlin. 1910-12: traveled in Italy after being awarded the Villa Romana Prize. 1914-15: military service, partly in cartographic department in Berlin, partly in Poland. 1916: the first of his etchings published. 1919-34: taught etching at the Hochschule für die bildenden Künste, Berlin. 1927: elected member of the Prussian Academy of Arts (Preussische Akademie der Künste), department of fine arts. 1927-37: designed for the Berlin publishers S. Fischer, Paul Neff, and Grote, and for J. Würth, Darmstadt. 1934-45: principal of the master class for graphics at the Prussian Akademie der Künste, Berlin. 1937: awarded an Honorary Certificate at the Paris International Exhibition. 1942: left Berlin due to the bombing raids. 1943: complete destruction by bombing of his Berlin-Steglitz house, with loss of all his work and collection. 1947-51: director of illustration class at the Stuttgart Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Künste. 1956: awarded Hans Thoma Medal from City of Baden-Württemberg. Died 6 January 1957 in Schloss Ludwigsburg, Stuttgart. The Hans Meid Prize established 1993.
