Kurt Weidemann

Biography

Typography, type design, book design, design historian. Born 15 December 1922 in Eichmedien, E. Prussia (now in Poland). 1940-45: military service in Russia. 1945-50: prisoner-of-war in Soviet Union. 1950-52: trained as a compositor in Lübeck. 1953-5: studied book design and typography at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Stuttgart. 1956-63: Editor and type manager of the printing journal Der Druckspiegel. From c1957: wrote articles for design journals. 1963-83: taught Information Graphics at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Stuttgart, and, from 1983, at Karlsruhe; he was also a freelance designer. 1974-89: consultant to Deutsche Bank. From 1987: consultant to Daimler-Benz-Konzerns. From 1991: taught at the Design Academy, Karlsruhe. He was President of ICOGRADA and had had commissions including those from the German Federal Post Office, Mercedes-Benz, Daimler-Benz, Büchergilde Gutenberg and Zeiss. 1995: awarded Raymond Loewy Prize. 1996: awarded German Order of Merit.
