Paul Hampel

Biography

Trademarks, certificates, educator. Born 8 April 1874 in Ohlau in Schlesien; son of an artist. Studied at the Breslau Kunstgewerbeschule (later Kunstakademie) and, in Düsseldorf, a course in lettering under Peter Behrens and F.H. Ehmcke. This was followed by further studies in Berlin under Fleischer-Wiemans. From 1906: instructor, then director of the department of Buchgewerbe und Gebrauchsgraphik at the Städt. Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule, Breslau. Designer on glass and porcelain, and letterer of inscriptions on graves and memorials. By 1931: member of Gruppe Schlesian, BDG. Awarded silver medal at the 1914 ‘Bugra’ exhibition in Leipzig, and a gold medal at a Breslau exhibition. He was a member of the Deutschen Werkbundes from 1908 and, from 1936, a member of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste.
