Ernst Engel

Biography

Born Ernst Hermann Karl Engel 13 December 1879 in Kassel. 1894-8: student of composing. 1898-9: studied at the Kassel Kunstgewerbeschule. 1904: inspired by coming across a setting for the Rudhard typefoundry’s recently-issued Behrens-Schrift, Engel applied for a position at the Offenbach firm (which changed its name to Klingspor Brothers in 1906). 1905: working in Klingspor’s in-house printing department. 1908-26: apart from the interruption of the First World War, Engel supervised the design and printing of the memorable type specimen books and special books issued by the typefoundry. At the same time he taught book-printing classes at the Gewerbeschule, Frankfurt, and at the nearby Technische Lehranstalt (later Werkkunstschule), Offenbach a.M. (where he was still teaching in 1934). From 1921 he was producing his own work on a hand press (Ernst Engel-Presse; first title: Aus der jüdischen Sittenlehre). 1926: left Klingspor to concentrate on his private press (which eventually issued 40 titles). From 1956: lived in Ruhestand. Died 17 July 1967 in Bad König.
