Jupp Ernst

Biography

Publicity, posters, book covers, trademarks, product design. Born Joseph Caspar Jupp Ernst 20 December 1905 in Paderborn. 1926-9: studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Bielefeld: a teacher was Georg Trump. Worked for numerous publishers. 1938: had a studio in Berlin; member of the Reichskammer der bildende Künste. 1940?-45?: military service. 1951-8: editorial member of the union journal werk und zeit. Involved in various exhibitions: ‘Deutsches Buchschaffen’, 1947 (committee member); ‘Gebrauchsgraphik’, 1948 (director); ‘Industrial Design und Graphik’, documenta III Kassel, 1964 (head of committee). 1948-54: director of the Wuppertal Werkkunstschule. 1954: director of the Staatliche Werkkunstschule, Kassel. 1957: founded, with Wilhelm Wagenfeld and Willem Sandberg, the journal form, of which he was the editor. By the 1970s his interest had turned to photography and sculpture and he was producing steles using geometric motifs. His sculptures were exhibited 1977, 1979, 1981 at the Biennali Internazionali Dantesch, Centro Dantesco, Ravenna. 1974: awarded Service Cross of the German Federal Republic. Died 24 October 1987 in Düren-Langerwehe.
