Georg Trump

Biography

Book design, publicity, illustration, postage stamps, lettering, typography, type design. Born 10 (or 15) July 1896 in Brettheim, Württemberg. 1912-14: studied at the Stuttgart Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule: teachers included Johann Vinzenz Cissarz and F.H. Ernst Schneidler. 1915-19: military service. 1919-21: returned to the Kunstgewerbeschule and continued studies with Schneidler. 1921-3: Schneidler’s assistant. 1923-6: lived in Sardinia and Italy; produced linocuts, watercolours, drawings, ceramics. 1926: returned to Germany and started a graphics department in the Bielefeld Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule, soon creating a ‘Bielefeld Style’. 1928: founding member of the ring ‘neue Werbegestalter’ (circle of modern advertising designers). 1929-31: invited by Paul Renner, he taught lettering and typography at the new Meisterschule für Deutschlands Buchdrucker, Munich. 1931-4: head of the Berlin Kunstgewerbe- und Handwerkerschule (also called Graphische Hochschule). September 1934: with the dismissal of Renner, he became director of studies at the Munich Meisterschule (with Renner’s encouragement). Trump designed the typefaces City (1931; Berthold), Rockwell (1933), Trump Deutsch (Berthold, 1935), and books for the Büchergilde Gutenberg. C.E. Weber typefoundry, Stuttgart, produced Trump’s Schadow typeface family from 1937 to 1945.

Trump again had to do military service when war broke out in 1939; he was badly wounded during the last days of the war on the eastern front in 1945. ‘In the war he was shot in the stomach, a wound which continually plagued him.’ (H.E. Friedrich, Imprimatur, 1952/3). 1945: returned to Munich to rebuild the Meisterschule which had been destroyed by bombing (which had also destroyed much of his own work), working there until 1953. From c1950-July 1950: art director of the commercial art journal Gebrauchsgraphik.

After his retirement due to ill health he produced other typefaces, including Delphin (1951-5), Amati (1953), Codex (1955, Weber), Palomba (1955), Time (1956, Weber), Trump Mediäval (1954-60), Jaguar (1965), Mauritius (1968). Trump also designed Forum and Signum (both C.E. Weber). He also travelled throughout Europe during the 1950s and 1960s, producing fine drawings for his friend H.E. Friedrich’s Sternfahrten book series. He was awarded the Plakat-Wettbewerb der Industrie - und Handelskammer , Mannheim, 1951, the Type Directors Club of New York medal, 1982, and the Ullstein Ring, 1983. In 1965 he had been a designer-contributor to Ideeller Wettbewerb für Buchgestalter zu Werken von William Shakespeare, part of Leipzig’s International Book Arts exhibition. Trump died 21 December 1985, aged 89, in Munich.
