Biography

Book designer, publisher. Born 18 April 1900 in Cologne. 1925: first published books; these included the series ‘Neue deutsche Druckschriften’ (New German printing types), brief writings by F.H. Ehmcke and showings of his types. 1930s: worked for Schocken Books and with Moritz Spitzer. 4 December 1943: the office and archives were destroyed in an air raid. A month later another air raid destroyed his Berlin office. He restarted his publishing firm in Heidelberg after the war.
