Walter Hofmann

Biography

Certificates, letterheads, woodcuts, writer. Born 18 May 1893 in Lind, Saxony. 1915-October 1919: military service aboard a U-boat. October 1919-March 1920: student at the Leipzig Staatliche Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe; teachers included Winterstein and Klepzig. 1922-3: art director in Rotterdam. From October 1923: returned to the Leipzig Akademie where he was a Meisterschuler to the director, Walter Tiemann. During 1925-7: directed the Winterhilf Festival and the Bunter Balls at the Zoo. 1926: directed the first masquerade in Leipzig. 1927: first chairman/president of the BDG (Bund Deutscher Gebrauchsgraphiker), Landesgruppe Mitteldeutschland. 1928: special editor for the Leipzig no., AfB, v. 9. 1928: met the designer Marga Hartmann in Dresden; married 1932.

August 1933: Director of the Government Index of Fine Artists, Leipzig area. ‘Our leader, Chancellor of the Reich Adolf Hitler, has now, as part of his great reconstruction project, taken the creative artist under his protection, expressing this will through the foundation of the Government Index of Artists [Reichskartell der bildenden Künstler].’ (autobiography, 1933, p. 274) ‘In May [1933] I was forty and celebrated as a convinced [bewusster] National Socialist, as my struggle for German Culture and Honour. In the Third Reich I want to be a building block [part of Hitler’s great project; Baustein], and my work to proceed in the German spirit.’ (autobiography, 1933, p. 278).

By 1934: frequent contributor to the art and printing journal Archiv für Buchgewerbe; and by 1936 its art director. 1937: designer of the Deutsche Buchkunst (German Book-Art) exhibition, Leipzig; won an award at the Paris World’s Fair. By 1938: artistic adviser of the German Bookcraft Association (Deutsche Buchgewerbeverein).
