Walter Höhnisch

Biography

Type designer. Born 14 February 1906 in Dresden. Studied at Dresden Abendakademie für Kunstgewerbe. 1927: studied at Technische Lehranstalten (Kunstgewerbeschule), Offenbach a.M., under Rudolf Koch and subsequently worked as letterer. He then worked at the Ludwig & Mayer typefoundry where, in 1930, he began to design type. 1949-71: again worked at the Ludwig & Mayer type foundry as type designer and graphic artist. Later taught lettering at the Frankfurt and Offenbach a.M. Volkshochschule. Designed the following type faces (all from Ludwig & Mayer): Tempo, 1930-32; Werbeschrift deutsch, 1933; National, 1933-8; Skizze, 1935; Stop, 1939; Antiqua die Schlanke, 1938-9; Express, 1952.
