Friedrich Karl Sallwey

Biography

Born 16 October 1918 in Langen/Hessen [Hesse?]. 1937-9, 1941-2: studied typesetting at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Offenbach a.M., under Ernst Engel, later Werkkunstschule under Schminke, and in the Städelsche Kunstschule, Frankfurt a.M. 1946-7: Sallwey at the University of Jena (Gotha) where he briefly taught graphics. From 1948: worked as assistant to Heinrich Jost at the Bauer typefoundry, Frankfurt a.M., at the same time teaching at the Städelschule. From 1951: freelance. 1954-7: freelance designer for Klingspor typefoundry for which he designed the typeface Information, issued 1958. His other typefaces: Present (1974, Stempel), Sallwey Script (1980, Linotype), Roundy (1993, Linotype).
